Buttenshaw Park Youth Park now open!

We are pleased to announce that the new youth focussed play space at Buttenshaw Park, Springwood, is now open.

The design of the new youth-focused space, shaped by community consultation, maximises the challenging sloping topography of the park and provides children and young adults with an exciting, high-energy space and a selection of adventure equipment, including:

• a double flying fox and group swing

• a unique, customised youth focused climbing and hang out structure,

• a climbing/bouldering wall, and

• a ping-pong table

The upgrades also include new seating, shelters, water bubbler, bike racks, sympathetic landscaping and a new footpath which links the play space with the wider park.

As we have communicated previously, to ensure the majority of the upgrade work could be delivered on time and within budget, the pump track that was initially part of the design plans was not able to be constructed as part of this project.

We will continue to investigate grant opportunities to deliver this component at a later time.

This project is funded under the Western Parkland City Liveability Program, which is part of the Western Sydney City Deal (WSCD). The WSCD is a 20 year-agreement between Australian and NSW governments, and the eight local Councils of the Western Parkland City.

Work on the Buttenshaw Park upgrade has started

    19 September 2022

Work on the new play space upgrades to Buttenshaw Park, Springwood, has now commenced.

The design of the new youth-focussed space, shaped by community consultation, looks to maximise the challenging sloping topography of the park to deliver an exciting, high-energy space with adventure equipment, including:

    • a double flying fox and group swing

    • a unique, customised youth focused climbing and hang out structure, and

    • a climbing/bouldering wall

During the upgrade works, part of the footpath connecting the park to the eastern side of the Aquatic and Fitness Centre is closed, as it is within the construction area and will be upgraded as part of this project. Access to the Aquatic and Fitness Centre from the park is still available along the western side of the building.

Directional signage is in place to assist park users to navigate around the work area.

All areas of the park outside of the construction area will remain open for use while the upgrade work is undertaken.

The current upgrade project is scheduled for completion by March 2023, weather permitting.

    6 July 2022

The upgrade of Buttenshaw Park, Springwood, is another step closer with Better View Landscapes Pty Ltd now on board to construct the exciting new youth space.

Better View Landscapes is a local company who bring a great deal of experience to the project, backed by a strong history of delivering comparable inclusive youth play spaces across NSW, including our very own Glenbrook Park.

Work on the upgrades is planned to start in August 2022.

To ensure the majority of the work can commence at Buttenshaw Park as soon as possible and within budget, Council determined to deliver the pump track component of the upgrade in a second stage of improvements.

Postponing the construction of the pump track is not a decision Council has taken lightly. While we have been preparing to break ground at the park, our region has experienced a perfect storm of recurring, extreme wet weather and the ongoing impacts of COVID-19.

This has included labour and material shortages and a corresponding escalation in the project costs.

Extensive community consultation, which included an extra round of feedback in late 2021 on the draft Buttenshaw Park Plan of Management and Masterplan was a rewarding process, but it also lengthened the project timeframe.

We want to fully deliver on the vision for the park, as expressed in the community endorsed Masterplan, and this is the best way to achieve it in the current climate.

Council is actively seeking grant funding currently, that can help us construct the pump track as quickly as possible.

Council adopts Buttenshaw Park Plan of Management and Masterplan

Council adopted the Buttenshaw Park Plan of Management and Masterplan at the Council Meeting on Tuesday 26 October 2021, with the following alterations:

    • Events and activities are limited to 250 people at any one time
    • Outdoor small scale group activities or uses, private, commercial or community, such as yoga and fitness classes or weddings, are permitted. They must be without amplification or other noise generation.

The Plan of Management and Masterplan will guide the future management and development of the park.

Buttenshaw Park is one of our four district parks in the Blue Mountains receiving an upgrade thanks to the Western Sydney City Deal Liveability Program.
Now that the plans have been adopted, Council will go to tender with plans to upgrade the youth play space. This upgrade will create an inclusive youth play space with adventure activities for teenagers.
