A Masterplan is a more detailed plan that guides future design to improve function and access, facilitate social activity and amenity for residents and visitors while recognising, respecting and enhancing the existing character. Masterplans must be endorsed by Council.

The draft Plan of Management and Masterplan will cover the following areas:

• The Springwood Aquatic Centre and Fitness Centre
• The parkland area of Buttenshaw Park with the Sanda Friendship Gardens
• The junior play area and parking area of the Great Western Highway
• Bushland along the eastern edge connected with Birdwood Gully

The main developments proposed in the Masterplan include the development of a play space for older kids, an upgrade or replacement of toilet facilities near the youth space, relocation of the junior play space away from the highway, improvements to the carpark alongside the highway and its expansion when the junior play space is removed, better pedestrian lighting, vehicular incursion barriers. Please note that currently the only project in the Masterplan that has been funded in the short term, is the play space for older kids which has been funded by the Western Sydney City Deal Liveability program.

A Plan of Management is a legal document to guide how the park will be managed. The POM divides the park into high level management zones (categories) reflecting their current use. Each zone will be managed for a different purpose; bushland, picnic areas or waterways. It establishes permissible uses, developments and the level of maintenance of the land. These plans must be endorsed by Crowns Land and Council.

We are seeking feedback on the early stage preliminary Masterplan and on the inclusive youth play space design until 9 August 2020.

We had a great response from our young people via our fun interactive tool called the Funbobulator, about what they would like to see in this new inclusive youth play space with adventure activities for older kids. See the concept design for the play space.

The most popular piece of equipment was the flying fox. Other equipment, such as the giant group swing and a two person spinner, were not far behind in popularity. All three pieces of playground equipment have been included in the designs, for review.

Other stand out pieces of the design are the inclusion of a one-of-a-kind climbing structure, that is also a netted hang-out space. We also have a pump track - which is a fun, easy way to do a loop on your wheels of choice. Let us know what you think, via our survey.

The preliminary Masterplan is in its early stages and we want to see if we are on the right track with this planning document.

You can provide feedback on what has been written and also suggest elements to include. We can then make appropriate changes and provide a more considered Masterplan to formally exhibit later in the year.

There will be new pathways to, and around, the new play space that meet accessibility standards and provide equitable use for all park users. Several pieces of equipment in the concept design will cater for those with additional needs, such as the basket/group swing and the flying fox.

There will also be break out spaces with quiet seating areas for those who may become easily overwhelmed. As we progress the design, we will continue to look at how we can incorporate best practice guidelines.
