About this project

The Katoomba Town Centre Upgrade program will deliver significant improvements to the Katoomba Street precinct, including safety and accessibility upgrades, new community and cultural infrastructure, and public domain and landscaping improvements for the benefit of residents, business owners and visitors.

The upgrade program will address priorities identified in the Katoomba Masterplan, with improvements in and around Katoomba Street and adjacent laneways.

Proposed works include:

  • Continuation and completion of street paving, kerb and guttering upgrades
  • Improved street furniture
  • New outdoor public dining facilities
  • Improved outdoor public event space
  • Street tree plantings and landscaping
  • Public art and treatments for cultural and heritage interpretation
  • Improved directional signage.

Project status

This project is currently in the detailed design phase.


Consultation opportunities

The Katoomba Masterplan was endorsed in November 2023 and provides a 20-year framework to guide sustainable revitalisation, development and investment in Katoomba. The vision outlined in the Katoomba Masterplan is the result of Council and the community working together between 2020 and 2023, when the plan was endorsed.

A round of community consultation was carried out in late 2024, during the planning and scoping phase of this upgrade program, with the responses received being used to inform the design and future evaluation of the upgrades. Further consultation was completed in May 2026. The feedback received will help inform detailed designs before construction begins early 2027.

  • Concept plan feedback

    Council has prepared concept plans for upgrades to Katoomba Street and a selection of nearby laneways and is inviting interested community members to provide feedback. Your feedback will be used to inform subsequent designs ahead of construction in early 2027.
