About this project

The Katoomba Town Centre Upgrade program will deliver significant improvements to the Katoomba Street precinct, including safety and accessibility upgrades, new community and cultural infrastructure, and public domain and landscaping improvements for the benefit of residents, business owners and visitors.

The upgrade program will address priorities identified in the Katoomba Masterplan, with improvements in and around Katoomba Street and adjacent laneways.

Proposed works include:

  • Continuation and completion of street paving, kerb and guttering upgrades
  • Improved street furniture
  • New outdoor public dining facilities
  • Improved outdoor public event space
  • Street tree plantings and landscaping
  • Public art and treatments for cultural and heritage interpretation
  • Improved directional signage.

Project status

This project is currently in the planning and design phase.


Consultation opportunities

The Katoomba Masterplanwas endorsed in November 2023 and provides a 20-year framework to guide sustainable revitalisation, development, and investment in Katoomba. The vision outlined in the Katoomba Masterplan is the result of Council and the community working together between 2020 and 2023, when the plan was endorsed.

An round of community consultation was carried out in late 2024, during the planning and scoping phase of this particular upgrade program, with the responses received being used to inform the design and future evaluation of the upgrades.

Consultation now open


The community is now invited to review concept plans (link below) for this project. Feedback received will help inform detailed designs before construction begins early 2027.

Community information stalls

Council officers are holding two community stalls so people can ask questions, view the concept designs in person and speak directly with the project team. The stalls will be weather dependent, so check here for updates.

  • 10am to 1pm, Thu 7 May – outside Katoomba Post Office (see map)
  • 8am to 11am, Sat 16 May – Civic Centre Arcade (see map)
