What is the South Lawson Park Toilet Block Project?

The South Lawson Park Toilet Block project involves the construction of a new, accessible toilet block with four gender-neutral accessible/ambulant cubicles, upgraded car parking with accessible spaces, and improved pathways to better serve the increasing number of park users.

The construction of a new universal design toilet building upgraded car park with dedicated accessible bays and accessible connecting pathways at South Lawson Park.

The amenities building will include –

    ● 1 x left-hand wheelchair accessible toilet, with baby change facility

    ● 1 x right-hand wheelchair accessible toilet

    ● 2 x ambulant accessible toilets; and

    ● Rainwater harvesting with water tanks to support the site’s environmental sustainability

    • A rising main for connection to sewer

Upgrades to the carpark will include surface improvement and creation and provide accessible car parking and accessible connections into the site

Construction of accessible pathways will link to existing pathways in South Lawson Park.

The project also includes the restoration of disturbed turf, plantings, mulching and edging.

    • Additional works to support the functionality of the project will include:
    • Relocating the sandstone block retaining wall to allow vehicle access to the new building
    • Construction of a parking zone for cleaning vehicles
    • Upgrading the surface of the paths leading to and from the building for vehicle access which are currently not suitable for regular vehicle traffic.

Why is a new toilet block being built at South Lawson Park?

The park’s popularity has grown significantly following recent upgrades, and previous community consultations in 2019 and 2023 have highlighted the need for a public toilet to accommodate the higher number of visitors.

What will the toilet block include?

The toilet block will feature four gender-neutral accessible/ambulant cubicles, with fully accessible pathways to the building. Additional works include a rising main to connect to the sewer and upgrades to the car park with accessible parking bays.

How was the location for the toilet block chosen?

The preferred location at Ferris Lane was selected because it offers easy access to the new sports and recreation areas, requires minimal impact on Wilson Street residents, and has good proximity to car parking.

What other upgrades are happening in South Lawson Park?

This toilet block is part of a broader upgrade of South Lawson Park, which includes the addition of a dog off-leash area, nature play areas, new pathways, seating, and improvements to environmental sustainability, such as bush regeneration.

Will there be any disruption to park activities during construction?

While construction is underway, there may be some temporary disruptions, but the project team will keep the community informed with regular updates.
