The Council has engaged widely with children, youth and families during 2016 to inform the development of a Child and Youth Plan, and review and update the Community Strategic Plan.
More than 500 people were consulted as part of this process, including primary school and high school children, young people, parents and other adults. Most of these consultations took the form of a Harwood Conversation.
Key themes identified to date through these consultations include:
- Living in a caring, connected, peaceful community;
- Safety on the street and getting around, especially on trains;
- Preserving the unique ecology of the mountains - no airport;
- Living in a tolerant, friendly, accepting community;
- Making time to meet your neighbours;
- Having safe, inclusive public spaces, with activities that are child and youth friendly but also inviting to the whole community;
- More bike tracks so kids can cycle in safety;
- More youth equipment in parks;
- Preserving what's great about the mountains; and
- Better employment and training pathways.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Sustainable Blue Mountains Together online survey. The survey was available from 20 April to 17 July 2016 and was open to all people who live, work, study or play in the Blue Mountains. It was promoted widely, through advertisements in the Blue Mountains Gazette and displays in libraries, neighbourhood centres and Council headquarters, as well as through briefings with specific interest groups. We received 145 responses in total.
When asked about what people value most about living in the Blue Mountains, the most common response was the peace and quiet of the natural environment and surrounding bushland, followed by an appreciation for the sense of community and quality of life.
In terms of priorities for action over the next 10 years, respondents identified their top priorities as:
- Maintain our World Heritage Area;
- Improve traffic management and roads; and
- Advocate for NO Western Sydney Airport.
These responses will help inform the update of our Community Strategic Plan, which guides the community priorities and strategies for the Blue Mountains, now and into the future.
