Blue Mountains City Council is introducing a new Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy, now available in draft form for review and feedback.

This policy addresses a current gap in Council’s governance framework by establishing clear principles for the responsible, ethical, and transparent use of AI technologies.

As AI continues to transform how work is done, this policy ensures that Council can unlock benefits such as improved decision-making, streamlined workflows, and enhanced staff experiences, while maintaining compliance with legal and ethical standards.

Why this matters:

Generative AI offers significant opportunities for innovation and efficiency. By adopting this policy, Council is enabling its workforce to confidently embrace AI tools for tasks such as content creation, process automation, and data analysis while safeguarding privacy, security, and community trust.

Key points:

• This is a policy only (no procedure at this stage).

• It applies to all Council employees and contractors using AI-driven tools.

• It sets out roles, responsibilities, and AI Use Principles, including fairness, accountability, privacy, and transparency.

How to provide feedback:

The draft policy can be downloaded here or from the Documents section. We invite and welcome any feedback or questions.

Submissions can be made by the submission form or via email to: lachlan.thomas@bmcc.nsw.gov.au.
