FAQs
What is happening to the outdoor Katoomba pools?
Works will include a new inclusive children’s pool, an accessible pathway down to the outdoor area, family friendly accessible toilet and change facilities, an accessible ramp into the main outdoor pool, and upgrades to the edges and guttering (also known as a wet deck) around the main outdoor pool.
Is there more detail on the designs?
The new children’s pool will be up to 60cm deep with a curved beach entry and water play for families. There will be two accessible unisex family change rooms with toilet and shower facilities, as well as four outdoor open heated showers. There will be some minor landscaping to provide more grassed seating.
Why is this happening?
Pool users told us how important this space is when we undertook the community consultation in 2018. This upgrade is an important step in being able to retain the pool for future use and ensure that our community has a modern accessible pool to use. For information about the Katoomba Sports and Aquatic Centre in the Open Space and Recreation Strategic Plan 2018 to 2028, please see pages 69 and 70 of the document.
When is this happening?
Construction commenced late September 2021 and will take up to 12 months to complete. This means the outdoor pool will be closed over the 2021/22 summer period. However, it will be ready for the following summer season of 2022/23.
How is accessibility being improved?
The pathway from the entrance of the aquatic centre down to the outdoor pools will be accessible to Australian Standards. The new toilet and change facilities next to the outdoor pools will be fully accessible and the children’s pool will have a wheelchair friendly beach entry. There will be an accessible ramp into the outdoor 50 metre pool, and upgrades to the edges and guttering (also known as a wet deck) around the main outdoor pool.
Is there any impact to the Gully?
Katoomba Sports & Aquatic Centre is located in The Gully, and Council understands and respects how significant The Gully is to Traditional Owners and the community. All works will be in line with The Gully Plan of Management, and will respect the site’s history.
I live nearby. Will there be any noise during the construction period?
There will be some noise associated with the demolition of the existing children’s pool, concrete concourse and access pathway. This work is expected to take place between 7am and 5pm Monday to Fridays and potentially Saturday mornings from 7am to 1pm. We thank you for your patience during this period.
Where else can I swim when the Katoomba outdoor pool is closed?
Outdoor pools including Glenbrook Swim Centre, Lawson Swim Centre and Blackheath Pool are currently open.
The opening of indoor pools is subject to Public Health orders. For more information about Blue Mountains Leisure Centres, including opening hours and updates on pools (including Katoomba indoor pool), visit Blue Mountains Leisure Centres.
Can I still use the other facilities at Katoomba?
The opening of the other facilities including the indoor pool, multipurpose sports court, fitness centre and Kids Kingdom is subject to Public Health Orders. See Katoomba Sports and Aquatic Centre for more information and updates.
Will there be additional shade?
The current shade sails on the children’s pool will be upgraded. Designs for additional shade have been completed and the cost confirmed. At this stage, additional shade is not funded, however Council is seeking funding for additional shade in the next upgrade phase.
How can I find out more about the construction and timeline?
We will update the Have Your Say page as the project progresses.
