Consultation has concluded.
Council has resolved to place the proposal to name the former Katoomba Library Space the Tibbi Whalan Hall.
Muriel “Tibbi” Whalan, was a prominent local identity who together with her partner, Peter Carroll, were advocates for many community initiatives. Their many campaigns resulted in the establishment of:
Katoomba High School, achieved in 1962;
A public library in Katoomba, achieved in 1974; and
The creation of the Katoomba-Leura Senior Citizens Club which has also facilitated local meal services.
The establishment of the Katoomba-Leura Senior Citizens Club in the area of the Katoomba Civic Centre is attributed to a “Save our Site” campaign led by Tibbi Whalan and Peter Carroll in the mid 1970’s. This campaign ensured that the land was retained for the benefit and use of the community, which continues today.
Council’s Naming Protocol outlines that when considering the naming of a Council asset or facility, the individual being considered for commemoration has:
Made a significant contribution to the local area, City of Blue Mountains, State of New South Wales or the Nation of Australia;
Achieved excellence in a particular field or endeavour of local, state or national significance (E.g. Sport, Science, Health, Education, Arts etc.);
Provided extensive community service; and
Is no longer living.
The proposal to name the former Katoomba Library meets these requirements.
Feedback on the proposal will be accepted until midnight Sunday 12 January, 2020.
