Draft Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan: Hazelbrook and Woodford Creeks

Blue Mountains Local Government Area (LGA) encompasses an area of 1,432km2 to the west of Sydney and includes large areas which are situated within Blue Mountains National Park. The area of focus for this study encompasses a number of overland flow floodways which flow through urbanised areas of Hazelbrook and Woodford.

A flood study was undertaken on behalf of Blue Mountains City Council (“Council”) and completed in 2013 to investigate flooding behaviour in the Hazelbrook Creek catchment. This justified a more detailed Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan (FRMSP) for management of land which was determined to be flood affected for Hazelbrook Creek and Woodford Creek sub-catchments.

The FRMSP further defines the characteristics of flood waters in the floodplain, including depth, velocity, direction and hazard to life. It assesses the potential impacts on local properties in a range of flood events. New more accurate flood mapping has been prepared to identify where floods may occur in extreme storm events.
