FAQs
Why is Council updating the Cemeteries Policy?
To ensure consistent, respectful, and sustainable management of Council-managed cemeteries, and to support recent changes to fees and services.
What’s included in the policy?
The policy sets out clear rules around fees, interment rights, refunds, cemetery access, memorialisation, and maintenance standards.
Does this change the cost of burial or cremation plots?
No, the draft policy reflects changes to fees already adopted by Council earlier in the year. It helps formalise how and when they apply.
What is a ‘non-resident surcharge’?
It’s a fee that applies when someone who doesn’t live in the Blue Mountains purchases a burial right. Some exceptions apply, such as for people who lived here before entering aged care outside the area.
Will I still be able to be buried near family?
Where possible, yes. The policy supports reasonable requests to be buried close to loved ones, subject to plot availability and other constraints.
