Community gardens contribute to individual health and creativity and community sustainability.
Council recognises the environmental and individual health and wellbeing benefits of community gardens, particularly for vulnerable people identified under the CARE objective of the Community Strategic Plan. Community gardens are recognised as appropriate initiatives for support by Council's Community Development Service, which supports ‘collaborative projects by communities of interest for the common good’. They also develop skills and knowledge for restoring planetary health.
This draft policy supports the establishment and continuation of community gardens on Council -owned land and to have a consistent and thorough process for assessing proposals for community gardens.
