Consultation has concluded. Thank you.

The City of the Blue Mountains is uniquely located within a National Park and a World Heritage Area. This location brings special responsibilities for people to protect the natural environment by the appropriate management of their companion animals. The keeping of companion animals although satisfying and rewarding can also impact on the immediate neighbourhood if a thoughtful approach to community living is not implemented.

The Council has adopted a community endorsed strategic plan ‘Sustainable Blue Mountains 2025’. The 2017-2021 Companion Animals Management Plan is consistent with the strategic plan.

It also complies with the obligations placed on the Council by the NSW Companion Animals Act 1998.

It provides us with an opportunity to find the balance between encouragement and support for the social benefits of pet ownership, whilst at the same time indicating a strong commitment to protecting public amenity, safety and the environment.
