Business Food Waste Separation Project and Mandate

Council has partnered with End Food Waste Australia (EFWA) to deliver the Katoomba Business Food Waste Separation Project (Katoomba Precinct Case Study).

The project aims to bring businesses and Council together to work on reducing the amount of food waste going to landfill and prepare you for the new 2030 mandated waste reduction deadline.

As you may be aware, the NSW Government has introduced the Protection of the Environment Legislation Amendment (FOGO Recycling) Bill 2024, which mandates that the NSW Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and NSW Councils will halve food waste to landfill by 2030. 25% of food waste in the Blue Mountains is generated by local businesses.

We have designed a 2-stage project to help the Blue Mountains food businesses make the transition to separating and processing food waste from landfill:

  • Stage 1: Council will partner with EFWA to create a Katoomba Precinct Case study focused on Katoomba food businesses over the next 4-5 months. This will help us to identify the best practices in engagement and education that can then be rolled out across the Blue Mountains region.
  • Stage 2: Council has been awarded an Approved Projects in Business Food Waste Partnerships Grants Program (Round 2) grant from the NSW EPA. Stage 2 will commence in July 2025. Council will roll out the program to all other food/hospitality businesses across the Blue Mountains’ region.

How can I take part?

We will deliver the program of promotion and one-on-one education to engage all local food businesses to use Bin Trim and take steps to separate business food waste. Bin Trim is an EPA food waste assessment software application which measures food waste generated by each business.

Businesses taking part can also access:

  • Easy and useful education links showing you how to separate and measure food waste.
  • Introduction and assistance to use the EPA Bin Trim App, a free online portal to help measure food waste generated by each business and track progress through data.
  • One-on-one assistance with trainers to show your staff how to measure any food waste being generated and enter the data into the app.
  • One-on-one and group workshop education events to help your staff to find clever cost savings ideas in food preparation and more savings in separating and processing of the remaining food waste.
  • Data captured by the Bin Trim app that shows your business progress.
  • Assistance to register your business for various sustainability accreditation to help promote your business as eco-friendly.
  • In partnership with the EFWA, we will negotiate better deals for the purchase of discounted bins and group discounts for waste pick-up and processing.

How does this benefit me?

Food waste is a significant cost for businesses and there are big savings to be made by reducing your food waste.

Taking part will also provide your business additional credibility when registering as an eco-tourism business and qualify your business to apply for the 2025 Local Business Awards BMCC Business award for Sustainability.

In addition to the immediate benefits for your business, this project will help you meet the requirements of the 2030 NSW EPA mandate and avoid the future financial penalties that will apply to food businesses that do not separate food waste.
