Springwood Town Centre upgrade

The final touches are being made to the roadside garden beds in Springwood Town Centre. Each garden bed has retained a mature crepe myrtle tree as the centrepiece which is in line with the adopted Masterplan. They were chosen to be part of the streetscape as they have a graceful form with an elevated canopy of glorious flowers. Most importantly, they retain open sight lines for pedestrians and traffic. The selection of plants for the understory are hardy, require no additional watering after establishment and are minimal maintenance. They will be planted closely together creating a low but full green and plum-coloured display to provide a dense groundcover to the whole garden bed. The carpet roses that were previously in the garden bed were ornamental, but have not been able to reduce the weed growth and many have now become threadbare despite regular fertiliser and mulch. The updated garden beds won’t compete with the crepe myrtles and the dense planting will also have the added benefit of keeping out weeds. The garden bed will include:

• Dianella ‘Little Jess’
• Alternanthera
• Loropetalum ‘Purple Pixie’

On Monday 8 February, traffic control will be in place at the three new pedestrian crossings. Works will be carried out to lay permanent asphalt on the approach and exit to each crossing, weather permitting.

We will endeavour to minimise disruption on the day.

There are now three new pedestrian crossings in Springwood Town Centre, with temporary line markings. Over the next couple of weeks and weather permitting, permanent lines will be painted on, as well as line marking to formalise the parking along Macquarie Road.

During this time, the paving surrounding the pedestrian crossings is also being re-laid to meet the new level of the crossing. The work is expected to be completed this month.

Works are currently underway on Macquarie Road (between Raymond Road and Ferguson Road) Springwood and will recommence from 11 January 2021. These works will be conducted in 24-hour shifts to shorten the timeframe and minimise the impact on businesses and other stakeholders. Construction activities will generate some unavoidable noise. However steps will be taken to minimise this noise where possible.

Pedestrian access along Macquarie Road will be maintained during these works as well as access into businesses. One lane of traffic will be open during the day to keep traffic moving. Way finding signage will be in place to assist visitors.

The pedestrian crossing at the front of the train station will be demolished and constructed first. Once this stage is complete, the pedestrian crossings at the front of The Bunker Cafe and close to the Early Childhood Health Centre/IGA will then be demolished and constructed concurrently.

We commenced night works on 15 November 2020 to implement new street plantings on Macquarie Road.

We will restart works on 11 January 2020 to bring 3 pedestrian crossings on Macquarie Road up to Australian standards and to formalise the parking spaces by marking them out. Works will be undertaken around the clock to shorten the timeframe and minimise disruption.

Stage 1 of the works will commence on the pedestrian crossing at the front of the train station, which will be demolished and constructed.

Once this is complete, Stage 2 will begin with the upgrade of the pedestrian crossing at the front of The Bunker Café. The pedestrian crossing at the front of the Early Childhood Health Centre/IGA will be demolished and constructed at the same time.

Yes. Although there will be some disruption to Macquarie Road, businesses and shops can stay open. We are doing everything we can to minimise the disruption so you will still be able to walk down the street, visit your favourite café and support local businesses.

At different times, we may need to close parts of the road, but one lane of traffic will be open during the day to keep traffic moving. If the road needs to be closed for a significant period, it will be done out of normal business hours.

Yes. Things may look at little different during construction but you will still be able to access all public transport including the trains, buses and taxis. As much as possible, we will have signage to help you find your way around.

You can continue to park in the various carparks around Springwood Town Centre. There will be periods of reduced parking next to the pedestrian crossings that are being upgraded. This is only temporary and there will be no permanent loss of parking once the upgrades are complete.
